August Summary

Crops picked – potatoes, carrots, peas, french beans, runner beans, lettuce beetroot, red onions, radish, sweetcorn, courgette, squash, cucumber, rhubarb, spinach, sweetpeas and parsley.
Still to come swede leeks sprouts and parsnip.
The beans have been the most successful crop and we have been able to sell some at the meetings. The money earned will help towards the seeds for next year. Hopefully we will also be able to save some of our own seed to keep the costs down. Our tomatoes were hit by potato blight, there was carrot fly in the carrots and a few of the potatoes had wireworm, however, we have been very pleased with our first crops. We were given some raspberry canes by one of the other allotment holders and these seem to be growing well. We grew a few morning glory and sunflowers in with the veg. and these have attracted the bees as well as making a welcome splash of colour. We have been kept very busy trying to keep the grass cut and the weeds at bay but things are looking good. The next job is to get some stable manure on the plot, then we will plan what to grow next year.
Bridget.
